THE GOD OF COVENANT

TEXT: Gen17: 1-14

INTRODUCTION: A Covenant is an agreement or promise made between two or more parties and usually binding on the parties. It may be written or verbal and usually performed  under seal. A breach  or violation of the terms of agreement may attract sanction or discipline

God is faithful to His covenant. He never breaks His covenant. He enjoins us to let our yes be yes and no be no.

God unfolded His redemptive plan for man by the various covenants with the Patriachs and the children of Israel.

We shall discuss some of the old covenants which preceded the new covenant.

 

1) What is a Covenant ?. Discuss

 

2)Biblical Covenants .

 

a) Noahic covenant  : Gen6:17-22;        Gen8:18-22; Gen9:1-2

This is the covenant God made with Noah. It is a covenant of deliverance and protection from destruction and calamity

The Rainbow was the seal and token of God’s faithfulness to His promise. Noah’s part Involved sacrifice that is pleasing unto Him. The covenant causes the revocation of curses and barreness.

 

b) Abrahamic Covenant: Gen15:8; Gen17:1-14

This is God’s covenant with Abraham of possession of the land of Canaan to His descendants. It is associated with blessings, multiplication and fruitfulness. Our part Involves obedience. It involves circumcision. Abraham was circumcised at the age of 99years.

 

c) Mosaic Covenant: Exod19:1-6; Exod20:1-18

This is the covenant God established with the children of Israel at Mount Sinai after He lead them out of Egypt. It ushered in the dispensation of the Law. God requires complete obedience from His children.

 

MEMORY VERSE:

Gen 17:10 KJV This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.
