THE BLESSED NATION

TEXT: PSALMS 33:10-19

INTRODUCTION: A blessed nation is made up of blessed people. Although it may have challenges and face serious stormy seasons, such a nation can be sure to come through by the power of the Almighty God. At this moment in the history of Nigeria, it is good to reflect on three things we can do to highlight the blessedness of our dear nation. As we play our part, the blessings will be upon the nation and upon us as citizens.

Study Outline

A) Stand for your Nation: Gen 12:1-3; Proverbs 14:34; I Peter 2:9-10. We are called to a life whose purpose goes beyond just self-preservation or even self-aggrandizement. One of the reasons we are called out is that we may be a blessing to others. As a nation, Nigeria is blessed to be a blessing. The Church attracts blessings to the Nation. We must never forget that God’s people constitute a holy nation. The most solid stand we can take for our nation is to live right and stay in the righteousness of Jesus Christ.

B) Celebrate your Nation: Psalm 2:1-3; Psalm 16:6; Psalm 33: 12-13; Luke 7:5. Nigeria may not yet be everything she is supposed to be. Many do rage against the nation and this sometimes gets expressed in xenophobic attacks. All these attacks and the deviance of some of our people are plots of the enemy to stop the nation from shining in the comity of nations. Their rage and vain imaginations cannot stop Nigeria.

C) Pray for your Nation: II Chronicles 7:13-14; Proverbs 14:34; Daniel 2:20-22; 9:1-23; I Tim 2:1-3. God requires that we humble ourselves, pray, and turn away from evil ways. He assures us that our prayers will be answered. Daniel was a teenager when he was captured and displaced to Babylon. He rose to prominence in a strange land but never forgot his nation. He studied to understand when the captivity would end. He prayed until he got the answer. We must locate our destinies as individuals and as a nation through the word of God.

CONCLUSION: Our God frustrates the counsels of nations and foils all their plans. His plans and purposes will endure forever. Blessed indeed is the nation whose God is the LORD. Happy are the people He chooses as His very own (Exodus 19:5; Psalms 33:10-12). As we celebrate Nigeria’s 60th independence anniversary, let us pray that darkness will not prevail over the nation, but that God’s glory will rise over her (Isaiah 60:2-3). Amen.

MEMORY VERSE: Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. – Psalms 33:12 (KJV)
